CHAMISAL. Span. 'place overgrown with chamiso'. Several varieties of grayhish, narrow leaved Southwestern brush called by the Spanish name chamisa, also known as rabbitbrush. This is commonly seen growing along stretches in the Santa Fe and Taos regions. Another common brush, the saltbush, is called chamiso. The name is a folk name that may be related to Span.
