Another town that has completely vanished is Coalora. Created in 1900 by the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad when it ran a line to the coalfields about one and a half miles north of Capitan. The New Mexico Fuel Company established operations there and employed a large number of men to work the coal mines. The population numbered around two thousand in 1902. Coalora did not last long for in 1905 the population had dwindled to about 350. When the railroad built a line to the coal mine at Dawson, Coalora died. Courtesy Henry Chenoweth.
