A promoters Dream REMAINS: Nothing left. Indian Ruins, private land. |
Another example of real estate promotion that failed is Council Rock. The name came from a large boulder referred to by that name which in earlier years had been used as a meeting place for Indians and white men. A silver strike in 1881 was the beginning of what was thought to be a bonanza. Promoters built close to a hundred cabins and sold lots for $250.00. The bonanza did not materialize and two years later the town faded into obscurity. Courtesy Henry Chenoweth. COUNCIL ROCK. NW of Magdalena on an unnumbered road just W of junction of NM 52 and US 60.
