FORT CUMMINGS. Near the entrance of Cooke's Canyon at Cooke's Spring, 6 mi NW of Florida (pronounced Flo-ri-da). Designed by General George B. McClellan with a high wall of adobe entirely enclosing the barracks and headquarters . It was built near a stagecoach station of the Butterfield Overland Mail in 1863 to protect mail carriers, emigrant trains, and freighters from the bands of Apaches. Named for Maj. Joseph Cummings; permanently abandoned in 1891.I will bet that the soldiers who were stationed here thought they had come to the end of the universe! What an experience any of these western forts must have been! Submitted by: Samuel W McWhorter
