FRISCO: Popular shortening of San Francisco. "St. Francis" Small framing and cattle ranching community 4 mi S of Reserve; on Tularosa River, which is used for irrigation. Scene of the famous fight when Elfego Baca stood off a crowd of Texas cowboys, variously estimated at from thirty to eighty in number. Imprisoned in an adobe hut he shot it out with his attackers for 33 hurs, killing one of his foes and wounding several others. He emerged unscathed. Submitted by: Samuel W McWhorter |
