FORT CUMMINGS. Near the entrance of Cooke's Canyon at Cooke's S;ring, 6 mi NW of Florida (Flo-rida). Designed by General George B. McClellan with a high wall of adobe entirely enclosing the barracks and headquarters, it was built near a stagecoach station of the Butterfield Overland Mail in 1863 to protect mail carriers, emigrant trains, and freighters from the bands of Apaches.
