GALISTEO: Originally an Indian Pueblo 22 mi S of Santa Fe. First mentioned by the Fray Rodriguez exploration party in 1581. Governor Onate reports that he changed the name to SANTA ANA, which has not survived. Name is an old term for a native of Galicia, but it may have been transferred from a town in Estremadura in Spain. Galisteo became the seat of a Franciscan mission established between 1617 and 1629. In the Pueblo Revolt, the Indians killed the resident priest, the father custodian, and other missionaries. The name appears as 'Galisteo' on L'Atlas Curieux (1700). In 1706 the community was re established at Galisteo by Gov. Cuervo y Valdez. Between 1782 and 1794 the inhabitants moved to Santo Domingo to escape the Comanche raids.GALISTEO CREEK.
