Although not strictly a ghost town because it is an occupied residential area, it once was a coal mining town located about three miles north of Gallup. Started in 1920 when the Gallup American Coal Company began sinking shafts into coal deposits, Gamerco emerged as a town that supported about five hundred miners together with their families. The mines were closed during the early 1960s but many old buildings and a towering smokestack from the power plant remain. Courtesy Henry Chenoweth.
