Hematite was a town here today and gone tomorrow. The town was a placer mining camp founded in the fall of 1895 and did well for a year or two. It had, at most, a population of two hundred and a boardinghouse, a store and a stamp mill. The finding of placer gold apparently was not enough to keep the town alive very long. Not a trace remains of Hematite today. Courtesy Henry Chenoweth.
