As long as the mining town of Kelly existed, so did Magdalena. When Kelly died, so did Magdalena. Kelly was built on both sides of the slope of a canyon without enough flat space for saloon, dance halls and other places where miners could spend their leisure time. That was the principal reason for Magdalena's existence. Contributing to the town's economy in later years was its railroad and the sheep and cattle ranches that sprang up around the town. But the Magdalena of the 1880s is gone, leaving behind enough evidence of its earlier years. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
