MANZANA. MANZANO. Near this town, on NM 10, 15 mi NW of Mountainair, are two old apple orchards, which tradition claims were planted during the mission period before 1676. But Dr. Florence Hawley Ellis, University of New Mexico, dates the trees, from ring growth, as no earlier than 1800. They are said to be the oldest apple ordhards in America. Tradition held that they were planted when Manzano was still one of the pueblos in the Salinas region. However, the Spanish village dates from 1829. Houses of present day settlement are around a lake. E of the lake is a torreon or defense tower, which was constructed as protection against Indian attacks.MAZANO GRANT. An area 5 mi square largely SE of Manzano. Settlement dates from November 28, 1829, when the Territorial Deputation passed a decree ordering the justice of the Jurisdiction to place the petitioners in possession of lands for which they had asked, 'giving each one the tillable land he may be able to cultivate, leaving the remainder for such other indidivuals who in future may establish themselves therein'.MANZANO MOUNTAINS. Extend SE of Albuquerque and S of Sandia Mts. Name derived from the town and old apple orchards. MANZANO PEAK. High elevation 6 mi SW of village of Manzano for which it is named.
