The American Fuel Company produced the town of Navajo when it opened the Navajo coal mine. The company built two and four room houses for the miners all of which were supplied with water and electricity. About 1922, the Gallup American Coal Company sank a shaft at Gamerco, less than a mile west of Navajo, and the center of coal mining activity shifted there. In the mid-1930s Navajo reported a population of six hundred. Today there is no one and nothing to see. Courtesy Henry Chenoweth.
