OTOWI. Tewa, p'otsuivi,'gap where water sinks'. Trading point on NM 4, 35 mi NW of Santa Fe and 7 mi W of San Ildefonso. Official gaging station for water on the upper Rio Grande. Nearby is one of the important pueblo ruins in the Pajarito region. During 1923, a post office was requested for Los Alamos Ranch, using the ranch name, but since a place near Las Vegas already had that name, three others were submitted and the department chose Otowi. How Otowi brought the indian world to the edge of this Los Alamos nuclear physics laboratory is told by Peggy Pond Church in her book 'The house at Otowi Bridge'. (1960).
