Copper mining was the reason for the town of Paschal. It had its beginning in 1879 and by 1882 the community numbered a thousand souls. A fifty-ton smelter was built. The smelter ran successfully until the price of copper dropped and the cost of labor increased to the point where the owners were forced to close the mine. The townspeople began to leave and by March, 1883, three hundred remained. The smelter was dismantled, buildings were torn down and the town vanished.CourtesyHenry Chenoweth. |
