PENDARIES. On NM 94, 10 mi NW of Sapello. Jean Pendaries was a Frenchman who settled on a ranch near here in the early days. He founded the community of Rociada and later moved up to Gascon, in Mora County on the Rito de Gascon, naming the stream and settlement for his native province. He was the great- grandfather of Consuelo Baca La Farge, wife of the novelist Oliver LaFarge, who has described the life in these communities in a number of story sketches.
