PILAR. Span. 'pillar'. Trading point on US 64, 17 mi SW of Taos. Granted to settlers in 1795 by Fernando Chacon, military governorof NM, 1794/1805. Possibly named for a woman called Pilar, a feminine name derived from Nuestra Senora del Pilar, whose shrine in Zargoza is one of the chief santuaries in Spain. However, it is also reported that the name comes from a male Indian called Pilar Vigil. Submitted by: Samuel W McWhorter |
