Pittsburg came into being almost over night in November 1903 when a man named Bernardo Silva (reportedly drunk at the time) revealed to Hillsboro residents the location of a rich gold deposit in the Caballo Mountains. The new mining camp's name -- taken from the local mining district -- was chosen in December 1903. The population was about 150 by 1905, but, the mines soon played out and Pittsburg was abandoned. The town's post office, called Shandon, was open from 1904-1906.Courtesy Michael Cook. |
