POJOAQUE. A village on US 64, 18 mi NW of Santa Fe. J. P. Harrington, says that the Spanish name is an approximation of the Tewa words pasoong wa ghay, ' drink water place'. A Nambe Indian volunteered the information that the name is a corruption of a Santa Clara word, povi age, meaning 'place where the flowers grow along the stream'. Abandoned after the Pueblo Rebellion in 1680, it has not been used as an Indian pueblo.POJOAQUE GRANT. Tract 4 by 5 mi in area surrounding present settlement of Pojoaque. The governor, the war chief, and the preserver of the peace for the pueblo appeared before the Surveyor General for New Mexico and testified that the pueblo had received a grant from the King of Spain, and that forty years earlier a lawsuit had occured between the pueblo and a Mexican and the title deed of the pueblo was presented to the alcalde of Chimayo as evidence in the case. Since that time the grant has not been heard of. Asked how long the pueblo had been in existence, the Indians said the bell of the church bore the date 1710 and was cast for the church. They said their title was for one league from each corner of the church and that they raised wheat, corn, fruits, and stock, and subsisted entirely by agricultural pursuits.
