Ranchvale. 8 mi NW of Clovis on NM 277. Named by Vernon Tate, one of the first settlers, and its first postmaster. The Ranchvale school, completed in 1919, was the first consolidated school in NM.Ranch. The angelicized form of spanish word Rancho occurs more than a hundred times, but unless the name has come to be associated with a public settlement or commercial center, it has not been listed in this dictionary. This may be unfortunate, for all of these ranches are centers of human activity and they stamp names upon large geogriphical areas. In some cases, ranch names are perpetuated in present day town names.
