The history of San Geronimo dates back to 1835. During the early years when settlers first arrived, Indian raids were common and forced the settlers to build their homes close together as fortress protection. About 1879, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad began laying track to the west and contracted with an Eugenio Romero to supply all the ties to be used. Romero built a sawmill and a new industry came to the town. A Catholic church was built in 1906 and a school was constructed in 1907. In 1937, the town had about forty families. Today, the population has dwindled to only a few families and the town looks much as it did fifty years ago. Courtesy Henry Chenoweth.
