SAN LORENZO. Span. 'St Lawrence'. Ranching community on NM 180, 10 mi E of Santa Rita. Founded in 1714 by Gov. Juan Ignacio Flores Mogollon, in honor of St. Lawrence, third-century deacon, killled for his Christian faith at Rome. He was Spanish born; hence his feast has always been a major one among Spanish peoples. Named by Lorenzo Lopez to commemorate his patronal saint and his own name. A military outpost during the American occupation. Submitted by: Samuel W McWhorter

San Lorenzo is an old Hispanic village located in the Rio del Oso drainage in northern New Mexico. It is off Highway 84, approximately 9 miles southwest of Chili. In the mid 1800s Jicarilla Apache settled into the valley, traded and worked with the settlers. Records show a schoolhouse located there. Probably abandoned in 1930's or 1940's.
