NAME: San Pedro COUNTY: Socorro ROADS: 2WD GRID: 1 CLIMATE: Mild BEST TIME TO VISIT: Any |
COMMENTS:
San Pedro is on the south side of US380, directly (less than one mile) east of the Rio Grande and approximately two miles east of San Antonio. The ruins are interspersed among five or six houses and a few trailers. You can reach many buildings along a paved road. The ruins are probably in such good shape as there are still some residents in the town, who probably drive-off vandals. REMAINS: Cemetery, schoolhouse, several (10+) ruined adobes. |
The New Mexico State Historic Marker reads, "In the mid 19th century, the village of San Pedro was established nearby and had become a welcome and important trading center along the Camino Real as it passed along the east bank of the Rio Grande. San Pedro, once renowned for its extensive vineyards and produce, is now abandoned and in ruins. Like many similar villages, its importance and historic role are largely forgotten." The book, "Roadside New Mexico: A Guide to Historic Markers", has two pages on San Pedro, including a picture of the cemetery. The book says the town had a population of 223 people in 1860.
