SWARTZ. On NM 61, 15 mi SE of Santa Rita, and 21 mi Se of Bayard. First postmaster, Edward J. Swartz. Submitted by: Samuel W McWhorter Hello, Here is some additional info on the town of Swartz. (My daughter-in-law is a direct descendant of Edward James Swartz, the first postmaster. I believe he was also the last postmaster). This hamlet was also called SWARTS. In this place is the "Swartz Ruin Archaeological Site". (Prehistory: Late Mogollon Site). Edward James Swartz was born in Illinois in 1855 & came to New Mexico about 1879. He married Camilla Leyba in 1887 & set up housekeeping in San Isidro, later to become Swartz (also called Swarts). They had 12 children. E. J. "Jim" Swartz was also Grant Co. Assessor 1900-1904 and later served on the Board of Commissioners. Jim Swartz also owned the only general store for miles around. He died in 1918 of pneumonia after being a victim of the flu epidemic, aged 63. I'm told that the Swartz property passed to the owners of the Nan Cattle Co. I hope this helps. Regards, Yvonne McCord |
