VAUGHN

NAME: Vaughn
COUNTY: Guadalupe
ROADS: 2WD
GRID #(see map): 5
CLIMATE: Bad winters, but fine otherwise
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
Anytime
COMMENTS: Not a ghost town yet; but it should be. There are still a population, businesses, and the high school.
REMAINS: Gobs of old Americana stuff.

Vaughn started in the 1880's when it was a stopover on the Stinson cattle trail. Later it was at the center of the intersection of two major railroads, and now it is at the center of two major U.S. Highways. Vaughn still has a lot of businesses and people, but there are plenty of old deserted buildings. There are numerous old motels, gas stations, and businesses on the main highway to look at. Turn east on Cedar Street to get a glimpse of the original main street. Every building is intact, but none are in operation. The municipal swimming pool is there and may still be working (I can't tell). Also, check out the old train depot. On Friday evenings in the Fall, check out the Vaughn High School six-man football team in action for the last taste of true American sport. For the viewers outside of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska, and Texas, I'm not making 6-man football up. All schools with 6-man teams means that their town is, or should be, a ghost town.
