ZUNI. In 1539 Fray Marcos de Niza, accompanied by Estevanico, a moorish man who had been with Caeza de Baca three years earlier, saw one of the Zuni viliages which he called Hawikuh. This pueblo and its neighbor Halona were 'the middle and heap of the world' or the center of the Zuni universe, and two of the Seven Cities of Cibola sought by the Spanish Consquistadores. In 1540, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado occupied the Zuni site, and in 1580 Chamuscado visited it, using the name Cami. Espejo, in 1583, is considered to have first used the exact form Zuni as a name. Zuni appears on Lafora map in 1771. Post office, 1879, intermittently, to present. Submitted by: Samuel W. McWhorter
