Baxter Spring was a stage stop on the Wells Fargo line running to Westgate from Belmont. The stop was established in May 1867 and called Cedar Spring but was renamed later as Baxter after a local resident. The small settlement remained small until gold was discovered in 1905 in the hills just west of the settlement. A tent camp sprang up over night. By February 1906 there were 200 people at the camp and by spring the camp and grown to 400. Unfortunately, the ore veins were very shallow and soon ran out. By the end of 1906, the town was abandoned. Although there are no buildings left standing, there are a number of scattered stone ruins and foundations near the few mines of the district.
