No one became rich by spending time and effort at Broken Hills. The two Englishmen, Joseph Arthur and James Stratford, the founders of Broken Hills and the first prospectors to find ore worth mining, each was rewarded with only $68,000 after 5 years of intensive effort and hard labor. Arthur and Stratford sold their claims to a George Graham Rice, a promoter with a checkered background, whose only interest was to put other peoples money in his bank account. By promoting the Arthur and Stratford mine and selling shares in the property, Rice invested $75,000 of stockholder money into the mine and produced revenues of only $7,000. The stockholders initiated a full-scale investigation of Mr. Rice after which his new home was the state prison. Today, Broken Hills is a ghost town except for jackrabbits and pack rats. .
