Clayton is another short-lived mining camp. Founded in 1880, the camp never grew beyond 29 people because of its isolation. All supplies had to be brought in by private wagons. The already small veins disappeared altogether during the summer of 1881 and by winter Clayton was completely abandoned. Small mine dumps are the only marker of the site.
