On Highway 50 just outside Carson
City, current residents. REMAINS: A few buildings. |
About the most important contribution to come from the town of Dayton was the idea from Adolph Sutro to transport ore and to drain water from the deeper shafts of the Comstock horizontally rather than to pump or haul it out vertically, which, in some cases, was nearly impossible. The problem, of course, was money. The big mining companies agreed to make available the sum of $5 million for the project. Delay after delay after delay stalled completion for thirteen years, so long that the heyday of the Comstock was over. However, in 1880, the nearly four miles of tunnel delivered two billion gallons of water, water that would not have been removed otherwise. Being on a highway, Dayton is not a true ghost town and has a number of its original buildings still standing. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
