Prospect was a small residential settlement in 1885 for miners that worked in the nearby mining districts. A post office opened in 1893 to serve the fifty or so residents of Prospect. In 1908, a small smelter was built in Prospect along with several boardinghouses. Once the mines near Prospect and along nearby Secret Canyon closed down, the camp quickly emptied. The post office closed in 1918 and soon the camp was abandoned for good. Several ruins remain in Prospect with the ruins of the smelter being the most recognizable.
