Quartz Mountain is one of Nye County’s most interesting ghost towns. The first discoveries in the Quartz Mountain area took place in early 1920 but no activity took place until 1925. One of the first mines contained high-grade ore of lead and silver. This started a small rush to the district. Within a few months almost 500 people were gathered at the base of the mountain. A townsite was platted that contained an airplane landing strip and 440 lots that were for sale. Buildings from other nearby but deserted camps and towns were moved to Quartz Mountain. Automobiles were a common sight at Quartz Mountain making it relatively easy for people to travel to the site. More than fifteen mining companies were active in the district between 1926 and 1930. By 1929 life seemed to be ebbing from the town as one company after another ceased operations and soon Quartz Mountain was empty. Ruins from the mines abound in the area and are well worth investigating.
