NAME: Tates Station

ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime.
COMMENTS: Pretty scenery.
REMAINS: Old station house and stable.

Thomas Tate and his wife organized the station that developed into an important stop on the Austin-Belmont stage route in the 1880s and 1890s. Tate also had a mail delivery contract, which he fulfilled for more than thirty years—long before they established the station. He was influential in getting the first school built in Smoky Valley. Buildings at the station included the stone station house, a small lodging house, and a number of stables. The Tates closed the station in 1901 and sold the property in 1907. Eventually, the site was incorporated into a ranch that is still in operation today. The old station house and one of the stables remain.
