Copper ore was discovered in 1906 and soon a tent city complete with bunkhouses and a saloon grew up. Veteran was the company town of the Cumberland-Ely Copper Company. Veteran was the western terminus of the Nevada Northern Railway, and a large depot was constructed. A three story mining office was also built as well as two-story wooden bunkhouses for the 100 plus miners who were employed in the six-compartment mine. Ore values fell during 1913 and the mine closed a year later. All of Veteran’s buildings were moved to Ruth so work could begin on the huge Veteran’s open-pit copper mine. Now, only the huge pit is left to mark the camp of Veteran.
