Known primarily as the site for the world heavyweight boxing title match on August 31, 1867 between American Mike McCoole and Aaron Jones, the English champion. Promoters set up a ring on a farm owned by a William Richter. Over 3,000 persons attended the match including fight fans and reporters from New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, St. Louis, Boston and other big cities. In those days, fights were bare-knuckled affairs even though illegal. In the 34 th round, McCoole won the fight by knocking Jones through the ropes and out of the ring. Jones suffered broken ribs, a concussion, and internal bleeding. He died a few weeks later in Cincinnati. Today, all that is left of Busenbark is Richter's farm. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth. |
