COMMENTS:
In between Alva,Oklahoma and Hardtner Kansas. West of Burlington, Oklahoma. REMAINS: Grain elevators, Coop, a few houses, a city park, and the dilapidated old school. |
This was once a booming town, that was a major stop for cattlemen .It is said that Capron was established in 1893. The town had a school system that began in a one room school house, grew into a larger frame building, and eventually a permanent brick structure. A large tornado destroyed the school, and most of the business district in 1939. The school was just ten years old. The district rebuilt the school, which is the structure that you see today. The high schoolclosed down in 1968 due to falling enrollment. The grade school closed down in 1976 for the same reason. The school still stands, but since the roof is caved in you may look, but not touch. The post office closed down in 1994. Capron is a very pretty town, I would love to build a house their one day. If you go to visit Capron, take your kids and let them play at the park. It is worth visiting. The locals are few and far between. The 2000 census numbers Caprons population at 47. Submitted by: Ricky D. Petty |
