NAME: Kaw City COUNTY: Kay ROADS: 2WD GRID: 3 CLIMATE: Cold and icy in winter, hot in summer. BEST TIME TO VISIT: Spring and fall. |
COMMENTS:
The old Kaw City is about 1/2 mile below the present day Kaw City on Kaw Lake, ten miles east of Ponca City, Oklahoma. REMAINS: Grain elevator, old stores, old hotel. |
The town was in a rural farming area on the banks of the Arkansas River. The city was prosperous with a large hotel known in the early 1900's as one of the best places to stay west of St. Louis. In the late 1960's the Army Corps of Engineers constructed Kaw Dam on the Arkansas River just south of the original Kaw City site. A new town was built up the hill overlooking the old site. When the water in the lake is low, some of the roofs of the old structures can still be seen. Submitted by: Douglas L. Fisher |
