Old Alluwe was first settled in 1869 by the Delaware Indians. It was first called Lightning Creek but Changed to Alluwe in 1883. Alluwe means something better or superior in the Delaware language. The town grew with the discovery of oil near the town. There were well over a thousand oil wells in the Alluwe field. Things started to slow toward the middle of the 20th centery. The town was relocated 3 miles to the east under the name of New Alluwe. The town had to relocate when the Verdigris river was dammed to form Oologah Lake. New Alluwe now has about 100 residents.
