NAME: Strang
COUNTY: Mayes
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 3
CLIMATE: some snow in winter, very hot humid summers
BEST TIME TO VISIT: anytime
COMMENTS: 50 to 75 people call Strang home. Several small homes remain from the depression era and are still lived in. A few structures remain from statehood times. The town layout still remains with the majority of streets being dirt. Highway 69 north from Pryor, Ok. 7 miles and east by county road 9 miles.
REMAINS: The old school and auditorium remained until 1995 before collapsing. The one store in town has closed this year. The old single cell jail still remains and has the old door of bars on the front. What was once the train depot is now a pile of ruins and some of the old ties remain.
Strang has about 75 to 100 current residents. Nothing compared to the farming community it was in the early 1900's. Most residents are decendents of the families that settled here in early statehood and left during the 1930's. Strang was the center of a large farming community and had several stores, railroad, grain mills, churches and a school. The towns remaining residents now travel to surrounding communities for goods and farming consists of cattle ranches and some wheat. Submitted by: John Hall
