Welty is a small rural community named for the town site developer, Edwin A. Welty. He purchased land in 1905 and sold it to pioneers. School first opened in the area in 1898, and later moved to a new building built in 1905. The Welty Post Office was established on October 12, 1905, with Jerimiah D. Wilson as the first postmaster. The town supported area farmers and ranchers and at one time had several dry goods and general stores, a blacksmith, grocery stores, a cotton gin, and several churches. Today the Welty School and Post Office have closed; the community has a Volunteer Fire Department, churches, and a small store. Submitted by: Josh and Tanya Latham |
