An early resident of the area, a David M. Dorsey, was a beekeeper and maintained a number of beehives. This is how and why the town was given its name. The most that can be said today about Apiary centers around an historic old house built in 1888 by a William L. Brown. Brown and his wife homesteaded the property in the same year and it was to be their home for the next 44 years. It was in this house thirteen children were born to the Browns and it was in this house William Brown died in 1932. The house was still standing in 1964 as it was occupied by a bachelor son.
