Bonanza was named by Indians for its water. There are natural springs here. There was also a gold mine that operated from 1877 to 1910 with huge success and was considered at the time to be one of the richest in the area. Total production exceeded several million dollars. Most gold mining camps and the towns that grew up around them did not last nearly as long as did Bonanza. The mine was so successful it did not close operations until 1910-a span of 33 years.
