French Prairie, a flat, treeless area along the Willamette River, was an ideal location for farmers to plant crop. Ideal weather and plenty of water made it perfect for almost any crop. Wheat was the crop of choice and was first planted about 1830. The absence of roads in the area leading to Fort Vancouver required the wheat to be shipped by boat. As a result, many small towns came to life along the Willamette including Butteville. The town never developed beyond being a river landing. Although still alive and picturesque, it began to decline when the railroad bypassed the town as a stopping point. Today, it supports only one business, a small but modern grocery store.
