Near Salem. REMAINS: Many buildings. |
A covered bridge leads into the lumber and sawmill town of Hoskins nestled in a hollow at the edge of the Coast Range where the mountains merge with the flood plain of the Willamette River. The town received its name from nearby Fort Hoskins, built in 1856 and named after a Lt. Charles Hoskins killed in the battle of Monterey, Mexico ten years earlier. There are relics of the 1880s and a number of abandoned homes and cabins in the area but no evidence of streets or how the town was laid out. As described by a former resident: The place seems to be a thing of the past. SUBMITTED BY: Henry Chenowith |
