West of falls city. This is a correction
about, Valsetz, Polk County, Oregon, USA. Both roads to Valsetz (The one
from Logsden and the one from Falls City) are privately owned, and the general
public can only access these roads on weekends, all other times, access is
restricted.GARR NORICK. UPDATE: the 1 and only building, a large storage building for Weyerhauser, was razzed this past summer (2010) and all that remains there is a concrete pad where the building once stood. REMAINS: One building, which is unaccessible. |
Valsetz was a town created by a large lumber company to house many of it's employees. The town came into existence in 1924. The town included churches, a post office, stores, and a K-12 school. Due to cutbacks, the company closed the town in 1984ish, and relocated all of it's residents. During it's heyday, the town boasted a few hundred residents, as well as a fine high school football team, which made it to the state playoffs during the final year of the school's existence in 1986. The town was razed in 1988, and nearby Valsetz Lake, a manmade lake, was completely drained. One building, a large warehouse type structure, still remains, but is hidden from view down a long gated road. The road to Valsetz is owned by the lumber company, but allows traffic to travel through. There's not much to see, but the drive is beautiful. Be sure to ask in Falls City where to find the place, as it is tricky to locate on your own. Valsetz is still featured on some atlases for some reason, which may be of some help.
