NAME: Dewey COUNTY: Custer ROADS: 2WD GRID: 2 CLIMATE: Snow in winter-hot in summer. BEST TIME TO VISIT: Summer. |
COMMENTS:
Was a cattle town. REMAINS: Many original Buildings. |
During the early 1900s, Dewey was a busy shipping and commercial center for the western Hills. All this had to do with shipping cattle from nearby ranches to market by rail. When cattle began to be shipped to market by truck, Dewey started to decline. The once thriving cattle shipping town is now composed of a few deserted business houses along what was once the main street The most interesting trail to Dewey is that which wanders southward from US16, along Tepee Canyon.
