Hillhead is located at the head of a range of hills in the Coteau de Prairie Hills of NE South Dakota. It was settled in 1915. In 1917 a post office opened under the name of Airmont. However, this name was often confused with Fairmont, ND, about 30 miles away, so the name was changed to Hilltop. However, it was soon learned that a Hilltop already existed in the Black Hills of SD, so was finally given its permanent name of Hillhead in 1917. Initially Hillhead grew rapidly and reached its peak population (probably less than 100) in the mid 1920s. It became permanently uninhabited sometime in the 1970s. Submitted by: David Viland |
