Semi-ghost. REMAINS: Many original buildings. |
Many of the early towns in the Hills either lived or died depending upon the railroad. Whitewood is a little of both. It looked like a good real estate investment if and when the railroad came in. The Chicago & North Western did come to town and Whitewood became the place where the railroad divided to go to Sturgis and Rapid City on the east and Deadwood and Lead on the west. Although there is still life in Whitewood, the town never developed as its supporters had hoped. The town is a good example of pink sandstone buildings typical in the northern Hills.
