CARLTON

NAME: Carlton
COUNTY: Hamilton
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 3
CLIMATE: Mild winters, Hot summers, short Spring and Fall
BEST TIME TO VISIT: anytime
COMMENTS: I guess this is a Near Miss town. There are a few current residents. and one traffic light, flashing red. The Town was apparently built on a crossroads at the intersection of Texas FM Roads 219 and 1744, Southwest of the historical Old West town of Hico. Carlton is still "on the map."
REMAINS: Bank bldg, abandoned Cotton Gin Bldg, (no machinery) and a handfull of other, very old, stone and mortar stores in varying stages of falling down, remain. Most of the buildings that still have doors are locked up and being used by their owners for storage. The gas station/garage from model-T times is pretty cool. But the pumps are gone, of course. The bank appears to be a part-time upholstery shop, vault and all. (We looked in the windows).
Unknown. Will try to update you. We came across it on one of our all-day backroad motorcycle adventures. Submitted by: Steve Anderson
