An unusual name for a town fits the unusual circumstance that created the name. A few families from Indiana and Tennessee first settled the town in the 1840s. During the early days of the settlement, an educated Easterner appeared looking for a location to build a college. He selected as the ideal site a small hill or mound on which to build the school. Before arrangements could be made to start building, the man died and the school was never built. The name College Mound was coined and the community adopted it as the name of their town. The 19th century Methodist church and the well-kept cemetery are worthy of a visit. College Mound is easily accessible on Farm to Market Road 429 in Kaufman County. SUBMITTED BY: Henry Chenoweth
