NAME: Dixie
COUNTY: Grayson
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: cold to mild winters, hot summer
BEST TIME TO VISIT: anytime
COMMENTS: Off of Hwy 377, north of Whitesboro. The two Baptist churches nearby still hold services. The Dixie Cemetary off of the highway is a lovely place as well. Many date back to the Civil War and it is still used today. There are many occupid residences in the area.
REMAINS: 2 churches, cemetary, old ruins and slave cemetary (on private property)
I really don't know much on the history of the area. What I do know is that this area North of Whitesboro and Whitesboro itself was known as Wolf's Path. There were many wolves in the timbers at that time. It was also occupied by the Indians at one time. I do know that there is someone that has a slave cemetary that is in a pasture, there are a few markers and the area is well kept. There also used to be some remains of an old house in another pasture close by my father's house. This is also close to Lake Texoma, about 10 miles north, which flooded out many towns, in it's making. Just North of Dixie, along Hwy 377 North, there's Dexter, all that remains is an old hotel and Delaware Bend, which was flooded to make way for the lake. I know a few elderly ladies that lived at Delaware Bend and had to move when the Lake was made. They have a reunion every year. Submitted by: Tishira Brown
